# About

Texting An Inmate is a plain-English guide for families who want to stay in touch with someone in prison or jail. The short version: yes, you can text an inmate. If your loved one is in federal prison, InmateDB lets them text your real phone, and you reply like any other text.

We are the team behind InmateDB. We built this site to answer the questions families bring to us: how texting works in federal prison, what state prisons and county jails use instead, what it costs, and what to do when messages don't come through.

We recommend InmateDB for federal prisons because it is what we make and know best. For state prisons and county jails, we explain how the facility's own messaging provider works and where to check which one it uses.

Texting An Inmate is not a government website and is not affiliated with any prison or jail, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, CorrLinks or the other providers we describe. Nothing here is legal advice.
